The peak current listed in the datasheet is only achieved for a brief period during the motor coil charge cycle.

This calculator computes the maximum speed of a stepper motor which is limited by the time it takes for the coil to energize to it s maximum holding current and then de energize as polarity flips.

Note that the current capabilities of the supply must exceed the sum of the current requirements of the motor s and the logic circuits.
If your motor power supply voltage is from 7 5 to 15 volts then you may choose to use a single supply to operate the system.
